Don’t Fry – Sun Safety Facts

By Dr. Laura Dressel, Medical Director, The Family Health Centers

May 24 – 2017 – Memorial Day weekend is almost here. It’s the kickoff of summer and I can’t wait get outside with my friends and family. If you plan to be outdoors this weekend, I hope you have a great time. I also want you to keep in mind that Friday May 26, 2017 is “Don’t Fry Day.”
Don’t Fry Day is the National Council on Skin Cancer’s annual reminder to practice sun safety. Avoiding sun exposure is important for many reasons beyond the potential to slow premature aging. Consider these facts:

• UV radiation is a proven carcinogen!
• Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer in the U.S. than new cases of breast, prostate, lung or colon cancer combined.
• One in five Americans will develop skin cancer at some point in their lives.
• Skin Cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer.

The Family Health Centers wants you and your family to stay healthy. That means taking steps to now project your skin. Please follow these sun-safe practices this summer – and for the rest of your life.

• Avoid unprotected exposure to sunlight. Do not burn or tan!
• Wear sun protective clothing
• Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen to all areas of unprotected skin
• Routinely examine skin for changes & report concerns to your doctor
• Educate your family about the importance of sun safety

This Memorial Day, please remember those who have given their lives in service to our country. If you have any questions about staying safe in the sun or have concerns about your skin, please talk with your doctor at The Family Health Centers.
Have a great weekend!
