Low Fat Stir Fry Sauces

Ingredients:

CLASSIC BROWN STIR FRY SAUCE

  • ½ c. low sodium chicken(or vegetable) broth
  • ¼ c. Chinese rice cooking wine or dry sherry (I often replace this with Mirin).
  • 3 Tbsp Hoisin sauce or oyster sauce
  • 1 Tbsp low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame oil

NOTE: Oyster sauce can easily be found in Asian grocery stores. The ones I have seen at Ingles is not true oyster sauce. It is often made with soy sauce, while the ones in the Asian stores may contain MSG which can give more of an Umami flavor. MSG should be avoided with those suffering from migraines.

SWEET AND SOUR SAUCE

  • 6 Tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 6 Tbsp orange juice
  • 6 Tbsp sugar
  • 3 Tbsp ketchup
  • 1 ½ tsp cornstarch
  • ½ tsp salt

NOTE: Pineapple juice can be substituted for the orange juice.

SESAME SAUCE

  • ¾ c low sodium chicken (or vegetable) broth
  • ¼ c. low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp Chinese rice cooking wine or dry sherry or Mirin
  • 1 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp sesame seeds, toasted
  • 2 tsp toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tsp Asian chili-garlic sauce

Preparation Instructions:

Stir fry dishes are a quick and easy meal in which you can incorporate many various vegetables and/or meats. As these require high heat cooking methods, less oil can be used, and the food will have less time sitting in the cooking fats/oils. I have added a few easy sauces to use for stir fries, Just whisk together ingredients and use in stir fry recipes as desired! Just remember to whisk the sauce as the cornstarch will settle out as it sits! Also make sure all ingredients used in the stir fry should be prepped in advance and readily available to use next to your wok!
